Santiago League Round 12: Cupes defeat CDP in the closest game of the week- April 17, 2021

GUG - Plaza 105-106 Important game to mention about was the one when sixth ranked Plaza (2-7) saved a 1-point derby victory edging one of their biggest challengers GUG (4-4) 106-105 on Friday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of GUG. Plaza players were unselfish on offense dishing 25 assists. The winners were led by guard Oliver Garcia (188-96) who scored that evening 40 points (!!!) and 7 assists and Saul Mejia supported him with 14 points, 21 rebounds and 4 assists. Even a double-double of 23 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists by forward Juan Guerrero (205-93) did not help to save the game for GUG. Jose Omeriza added 12 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Plaza moved-up to fifth place. Defending champion GUG keeps the fourth position with four games lost. Plaza will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. GUG's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Santiago to the arena CDP. Cupes looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of forward Juan Miguel Suero (196-93) who helped to win the game recording a triple-double by scoring 30 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists and point guard Jaison Valdez (188-95) who added 21 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals during the contest. Cupes' coach Patrick Alfonso used entire bench in such tough game. The best for the losing side was center Eloy Vargas (211-88, college: Kentucky, agency: Duran International) with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 15 rebounds and point guard Adris De Leon (180-84, college: EWU) scored 23 points and 5 assists. Four Cupes and five CDP players scored in double figures. Cupes maintains first position with 7-2 record. CDP at the other side keeps the second place with two games lost. Cupes will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. CDP's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Santiago GUG.
